Cockle as second intermediate host of trematode parasites: consequences on sediment bioturbation and nutrient fluxes across the benthic interface
A. Richard, X. de Montaudouin, A. Rubiello, O. Maire
The edible cockle Cerastoderma edule plays a key ecological role in coastal environment. However, cockle populations more and more frequently experience catastrophic declines, which are largely due to trematode parasites. In this study we investigate the impact of Himasthla elongata, using cockles as second intermediate host, to study their potential impact on cockles bioturbation rates and, by cascading effect, on biogeochemical fluxes at the sediment-water interface. |
